The Best Proposal Spots on the Amalfi Coast — A Photographer's Honest Ranking
Where to propose on the Amalfi Coast: ranked by view, privacy, logistics and photographability. From a photographer who shoots 15+ proposals a year on the coast.
I shoot 15 to 20 proposals a year on the Amalfi Coast. Over time, certain spots have emerged as reliably good for the moment itself — meaning beautiful, private enough, with manageable logistics, and producing the kind of photos people actually want to print and frame.
Here’s the honest ranking, with what each spot is good for and what to watch out for.
1. The Terrace of Infinity, Villa Cimbrone, Ravello
Best for: maximum drama, sunset photos, a “this is the moment” view.
The Terrace of Infinity sits at the end of Villa Cimbrone’s gardens in Ravello, with marble busts lining a terrace that drops straight to the gulf below. The view extends to Salerno and the mountains beyond. It is, in my opinion, the most cinematic single spot on the entire coast.
Why it works for proposals:
- The marble busts and balustrade frame the couple naturally
- The view is so dramatic that the photos look like a film set
- Sunset light hits the western side of the gulf, glowing
- The garden has many quiet alternative spots if the terrace itself is busy
Watch out for:
- Entry fee — €10 per person to enter the villa
- Closing time — usually around sunset; check on the day of your booking
- Crowds in summer midday — late afternoon (after 5 PM) is much calmer
- Wind — the terrace catches a sea breeze; if she’s wearing a long dress, factor it in (often photographs beautifully)
Logistics: 25-minute drive uphill from Amalfi (or SITA bus). Park below Piazza Vescovado, walk 10 minutes to the villa entrance.
2. The Positano harbour wall at golden hour
Best for: classic postcard backdrop, easy logistics, “we’re in Positano” energy.
The harbour wall at the eastern end of Spiaggia Grande gives you the entire village rising behind you, boats in the water, the pastel-cliff Amalfi backdrop everyone associates with the coast.
Why it works for proposals:
- Iconic and instantly recognisable
- Open enough to allow discreet photography from 30–60 metres
- Wide harbour wall means there’s room to move
- Beach immediately below for the celebration walk
Watch out for:
- Beach crowds in summer — by 6 PM the wall has people, by sunset it’s busy
- Best window: just before sunset on a weekday in shoulder season. Slightly earlier (5–6 PM) in summer to dodge the peak crowd
- Some boats and clutter in the harbour year-round — accept them or angle the shot to minimise
Logistics: Easy. Walk down to Spiaggia Grande, head east towards the small pier where ferries dock. The wall is just past it.
3. Piazza Umberto I, Atrani
Best for: maximum privacy, intimate moments, locals-not-tourists vibe.
The tiny main square in Atrani is the size of a tennis court, fully pedestrianised, surrounded by white walls and topped by the bell tower of San Salvatore. There are usually a handful of locals having coffee and almost no tourists at any hour.
Why it works for proposals:
- The most private central location on the coast — most people will never see this square
- The small scale makes the moment feel intimate rather than performed
- The bell tower above adds drama without overwhelming the frame
- Easy to walk to the small beach for the celebration session afterwards
Watch out for:
- Less famous than Positano or Ravello — if you want photos that scream “Amalfi Coast”, this isn’t the one
- The square is small enough that discreet photography requires careful positioning; I plan it carefully
- Sometimes a wedding or local event happens here — I check the day before
Logistics: Easiest of all. From Amalfi, walk 10 minutes through the coastal tunnel and you’re there. No driving needed.
4. The Amalfi cathedral steps in the evening
Best for: monumental drama, evening lighting, post-dinner proposals.
The wide staircase up to the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, illuminated at night, is one of the most cinematic frames on the coast. A proposal at the top of the steps with the lit cathedral behind you photographs beautifully.
Why it works for proposals:
- Symmetrical, formal, ceremonial — feels like a moment
- Evening illumination gives a different look than the standard Amalfi Coast palette
- Close to dinner restaurants for an immediate celebration
- Open and public enough that nobody notices another couple
Watch out for:
- The square below can be busy in the evening
- The illumination has a specific colour temperature that’s different from natural light — beautiful but distinct
- We can’t use any specific lighting equipment without a permit
Logistics: Easy. Centre of Amalfi, accessible from any restaurant in the area.
5. The Gardens of Augustus, Capri
Best for: people who are already going to Capri for the day.
The famous viewpoint over the Faraglioni rocks, with a balustrade and gardens. The most beautiful coastal view in southern Italy in many people’s opinion.
Why it works for proposals:
- Iconic, dramatic, internationally recognised
- The Faraglioni in the background read instantly as “Capri”
- The gardens offer alternative spots if the main viewpoint is busy
Watch out for:
- Capri is a separate island — adds ferry logistics
- Crowded between 11 AM and 4 PM in season — go at 9 AM or after 5 PM
- Last fast ferry to the coast leaves before sunset in summer; for a sunset proposal you’ll need to overnight on the island
- Entry fee to the gardens
Logistics: Ferry from Positano (35–45 min) or Amalfi (1 hour). Funicular up from the port. 10-minute walk through Capri town to the gardens.
6. The Atrani staircase
Best for: dramatic high-angle photos, athletic couples.
The famous steps up the cliff from Atrani towards Ravello. You only need to climb 30–40 steps to get the iconic high-angle view back over the village to the sea.
Why it works:
- Dramatic vertical composition — village rooftops below, sea behind
- Almost always empty
- Free, public, no entry fees
Watch out for:
- Stairs (obvious — but worth flagging if either of you is in dressy shoes)
- Heat in summer — early morning or sunset only
- The steps are exposed; if it’s windy it can be uncomfortable
A few more options people don’t think about
The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei). A famous coastal hike between Bomerano and Nocelle, with views back over Positano. Best for couples who hike — the proposal spot is the Pietra del Cero viewpoint about an hour into the walk. Stunning, completely private, but you both need to be willing to hike for it.
Punta Carena lighthouse, Anacapri. The western tip of Capri at sunset. Quieter than the Gardens of Augustus, more dramatic light, less famous. Ferry-and-bus logistics, but worth it for a less-clichéd proposal.
Hotel Le Sirenuse rooftop, Positano. Only available if you book dinner there. Beautiful but expensive and slightly performative. Good for couples who already have a connection to the hotel.
Your own hotel terrace. Underrated. If you’re staying somewhere nice with a sea view (Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi, Le Sirenuse in Positano, Caruso in Ravello, etc.), the terrace at sunset gives a private, beautiful frame with no crowd risk at all.
How to actually plan it
Once you’ve picked a spot, the rest is logistics:
- Choose a date and time slot. Sunset is most popular but golden hour 30 minutes earlier often photographs better.
- Book the photographer first. Last-minute proposal coverage is sometimes possible but not guaranteed.
- Plan a backup for weather. I always have one. Indoor / covered locations on the coast that work for proposals exist — the Chiostro del Paradiso in Amalfi, hotel lobbies, etc.
- Pick a meeting signal. A small gesture you’ll make right before — touching her hair, switching hands, etc. — that tells me to start shooting.
- Decide on the celebration walk. Most couples want a 30–60 minute session right after. That’s where the just-engaged photos happen.
What ring photos actually look like
People always ask: do I need to do anything with the ring for photos? No. Just propose normally. After the moment, during the celebration walk, I take the ring shots in proper light — close-ups of the hand, holding hands together, the ring against your dress fabric, the ring against the sea. It takes 5 minutes and produces the photos people end up framing.
When you’re ready
Drop me a message with your date and a rough idea of the spot. I’ll come back the same day with a slot suggestion and the practical plan. Proposal sessions are €200 (the Signature package) and include both the moment and the celebration walk.
