Amalfi

Photographer in Amalfi Photo Sessions in the Heart of the Coast

Amalfi is the town that gave the coast its name. The Cathedral of Saint Andrew dominates the centre, the harbour buzzes with ferries, and a five-minute walk inland takes you into stone alleys where almost no one photographs. I shoot here weekly and know exactly when each spot opens up.

Why a photo session in Amalfi

Amalfi has the most cinematic centrepiece on the coast — the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, with its black-and-white striped facade rising above a wide staircase. Stand at the bottom of those steps with your partner, and you have a frame that’s worked for nine hundred years.

What people miss, though, is everything behind the cathedral. A two-minute walk inland takes you into the old paper-mill quarter: stone alleys, archways, a small running stream, and almost no foot traffic. These are some of my favourite portraits on the entire coast.

A typical Amalfi session

We usually start at the cathedral early — 7:30 to 8:30 AM — when the steps are empty and the light is still soft. Twenty minutes there gets you the iconic shots: walking up the staircase, sitting at the top, the facade as backdrop.

Then we slip into Via dei Mercanti, the main pedestrian street that becomes much quieter the moment you turn off it. The arches and stone walls create natural frames; the temperature drops a few degrees in the alleys, which is welcome in August. We finish at the harbour, where the town curves behind you and you have boats and water in the foreground.

If you book the Signature package and like a longer walk, Atrani is a 10-minute coastal stroll east. The two towns feel completely different — visiting both makes for a great variety of images in the same morning.

What to keep in mind

  • Cruise ships. When ferries and tenders dock the centre fills up fast. Early morning or late afternoon avoids them entirely.
  • Steps and slopes. Less than Positano, but the cathedral itself has a lot of stairs. Comfortable shoes recommended.
  • Restaurants. Many of the cafés on the cathedral square have outdoor seating that adds nice life to background shots — we don’t have to make the place look empty.
  • Heat. July and August midday is intense. Early morning sessions are not just better light, they’re more comfortable for everyone.

Edited images are delivered via a private online gallery within five to seven days, full resolution, ready to download and share.

Best photo spots — Amalfi

The cathedral steps — the wide staircase up to Sant'Andrea, framed by twin colonnades.
Piazza del Duomo at the cafés around the fountain — soft afternoon light.
Via dei Mercanti and the paper-mill alleys — narrow stone, archways, almost no traffic.
The harbour wall by the marina — the town curves behind, boats in the foreground.
Above the town near the Hotel Luna Convento — high-angle view of the cathedral and the gulf.
Best light: 7:30–9:00 AM (the cathedral steps are empty, the square is quiet) and 5:30 PM until sunset (the cathedral facade catches gold). Midday is harsh and busy, especially when the cruise ships dock between 10 AM and 3 PM.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cathedral square always crowded?

It can be — especially when ferries from Salerno and cruise tenders arrive between 10 AM and 1 PM. We work around them. At 7:30 AM the square is essentially yours; by 6 PM most day-trippers have left for Sorrento.

Can we shoot inside the cathedral?

The cathedral itself does not allow professional sessions inside. We shoot the facade, the steps, the cloister courtyard (when accessible) and the small piazza in front. There is plenty without going in.

How long does a session in Amalfi take?

An Express Session at the cathedral and one nearby alley takes about 45 minutes. A Signature Photo Walk covers the cathedral, the side streets and the harbour, usually 75–90 minutes including light walking.

Can we combine Amalfi with Atrani in one session?

Yes — they are a 10-minute walk apart along a coastal path. The Signature package is perfect for this combination, and you get two completely different moods (Amalfi grand and ceremonial, Atrani village-scale and intimate) in the same booking.

Is parking easy in Amalfi?

The Luna Rossa garage just east of the centre is the safest option. Street parking is essentially impossible in season. If you're staying nearby I always suggest walking — the town is small.
