Family Photoshoot on the Amalfi Coast — Multi-Generation Portraits & Holiday Memories

Family sessions on the Amalfi Coast work best when nobody has to hold a stiff smile for an hour. I shoot families on holiday — small groups of two or three, multi-generation gatherings of seven or eight — in a way that lets everyone be themselves. The most-loved photos almost always come from the moments between the formal frames.

How a family session is shaped

I plan family sessions in a different rhythm than couples sessions. Children have shorter attention spans, grandparents need pauses on stairs, and everybody needs water in summer. So we build in two to three short stops rather than one continuous walk.

In a typical Signature session for a family of five, we might:

  1. Start at a quiet location with a bench (so people can sit, drink water, regroup) — say, the upper terraces in Positano or Piazza Vescovado in Ravello.
  2. Move to a more scenic backdrop for the formal group shot — cathedral steps in Amalfi, the dome view in Positano.
  3. Finish with kids leading the way somewhere they want to go — beach, gelato shop, harbour.

The formal shots get done in the middle, when everyone’s relaxed but not yet tired. The first and last twenty minutes are for the natural moments — kids running ahead, grandparents holding hands, the toddler refusing to look at the camera (which always becomes someone’s favourite frame).

What to think about beforehand

  • Outfits as a palette, not a uniform. A loose colour story works better than identical outfits. Cream + sand + soft navy. Or terracotta + olive + cream. The Amalfi pastels do the rest.
  • Timing around naps and meals. If your toddler naps at 1 PM, we shoot at 9 AM. If grandparents are jet-lagged, we shoot in the afternoon, not at sunrise. I’m flexible.
  • Logistics for elderly relatives. Tell me. Some routes have a lot of stairs. We can pick a location with nearby parking and minimal climbing if needed.
  • Cousins and friends. Some families come for a multi-family reunion — tell me upfront, I’ll plan a route that gives everyone a chance.

After the session

I edit the gallery with families in mind: a mix of full-resolution images for printing and slightly compressed versions optimised for sharing on phones (so grandparents can pass them around without anything looking blurry). The full set arrives in a private link within five to seven days.

Many families come back for annual sessions — same trip the following year, kids a year older. If that’s something you’d like, I keep notes on what worked well and what we can do differently next time.

What's included

Pre-session messaging — I help you pick the location and a time everyone can manage.
45–90 minutes of shooting at a relaxed pace, with breaks built in for kids.
Group portraits + smaller combinations (just the parents, just the grandparents, just the kids).
60–100 edited images delivered via private gallery within 5–7 days.
Light direction throughout — no rigid posing, lots of small natural moments.
Best slot for families: 8:30–10:00 AM (kids are fresh, light is soft, streets are empty) or 5:30–7:00 PM (after the day's heat). Mornings are usually easier with younger children. Avoid the 11 AM–3 PM window in summer — too hot, too crowded, and naps.

Frequently asked questions

How young is too young?

I've shot babies a few weeks old and great-grandparents in their nineties. Kids 1–3 years old can be unpredictable but the gallery almost always has the best moments precisely because of that. Older kids (5+) usually love the walk if we keep it under 60 minutes.

How big can the group be?

Up to 8 people works comfortably with the Signature package. Larger gatherings (10+) are possible — I'd recommend a single fixed location rather than a walking tour, and a slightly extended session.

Will we get formal posed shots too?

Yes. About a third of the gallery will be the deliberate group portraits (everyone looking at the camera, properly arranged) and the rest will be the natural in-between moments — walking, laughing, holding hands, kids running ahead. Both have their place.

What should everyone wear?

Pick a simple palette of two or three soft colours and let the family choose within it (e.g. "cream, sand and one navy accent"). Avoid loud branded t-shirts and bold primary colours that will date the photos. Comfortable shoes for everyone — there are stairs.

What about really small children?

Bring snacks. Bring a favourite toy. Tell me what works for distracting them — silly noises, peekaboo, a song. We start with the family combinations that are easiest (the kids first, while they're fresh) and end with the ones where it's okay if everyone is tired.
