The Best Time for a Photoshoot on the Amalfi Coast — Hour by Hour, Month by Month
When to book a photo session on the Amalfi Coast: golden hour vs sunrise, season by season, crowd patterns, and how the light changes through the year. From a working local photographer.
The Amalfi Coast looks beautiful in any photograph, but when you take the photograph determines whether it looks ordinary or unforgettable. After several years of shooting here professionally, I’ve learned to think about timing in two layers: what hour of the day, and what time of year.
Hour by hour
Sunrise and the first hour after
In summer (May–August): sunrise is roughly 5:45–6:15 AM. The first hour of light is the most beautiful and most empty time on the coast. Light is warm but soft, the air is cool, and the villages are essentially unoccupied. Locals are just starting to open shops; tourists are still in bed.
I love this slot for portraits, but it requires commitment — you genuinely need to be on location at 6:30 AM, which means leaving your hotel before 6.
7:00–9:00 AM
The most practical “early” slot. Light is still warm and soft, much of Positano and Amalfi is still quiet, and you’re functional. My most-booked window for couples sessions in summer.
9:00–11:00 AM
Light is still good, but crowds build fast — especially the cruise tenders arriving in Amalfi (around 10 AM) and the Sorrento day-trippers reaching Positano. Workable for portraits, but you’ll have people in the background.
11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Strong direct sun. Hot in summer (often 30°C+ in the villages, less of a breeze than you’d expect). Light is harsh and unflattering for faces — strong contrast, deep shadows under the eyes. The hardest window for portraits unless we use deep shade or interior locations.
I rarely book sessions in this slot in summer. In April or October the light is more manageable.
4:00–6:00 PM
Light starts to soften and warm. Crowds begin to thin (the day-trippers head back to their hotels). A reliable, flexible slot — good for families with kids who napped through the heat of the day.
6:00 PM until sunset
Golden hour. The best light of the day for most photography. The villages glow in warm light, the sea takes on that deep evening blue, faces are flattered. Everyone’s in a good mood after lunch and a swim.
Sunset times by month: about 7:30 PM in March, 8:30 PM in June, 7:30 PM in September, 5:00 PM in December.
This is the most-booked slot for couples and proposals.
After sunset (blue hour)
The 30 minutes after sunset are magical. The sky goes deep blue, lights come on in the villages, and you can shoot beautiful illuminated images. Underrated — most people pack up at sunset, but the next 20 minutes are often the most cinematic of the day.
Month by month
April
Light is soft and warm, manageable temperatures (15–22°C). Bougainvillea begins to bloom. Many places haven’t opened yet. Lower crowds, lower prices in town. One of the best months for photography overall.
May
Bougainvillea in full bloom. Long days. Light is excellent throughout. Crowds start to build but still very manageable except for Easter and bank-holiday weekends. My favourite month to shoot.
June
Hot but not yet brutal. Days are long (sunset around 8:45 PM). Beach season is in full swing. Crowds are noticeable in Positano but not overwhelming. Fine for sessions if we work around the heat (early morning or evening).
July
Peak Italian summer. Crowded, hot (30°C+), light harsh from late morning to mid-afternoon. Sessions only at sunrise or after 6 PM. Book several weeks ahead — I get fully booked.
August
The most challenging month for photography. Italians take their main holidays, so locals are away and tourists peak. Cathedral square and Spiaggia Grande are shoulder-to-shoulder midday. Shoot at sunrise or after 7 PM, or pick Atrani and Ravello over the more famous spots.
September
The unsung favourite. Light is the most golden of the year, temperatures are perfect (mid-20s), the sea is at its warmest, and crowds drop sharply after the first week. If I could only shoot one month, it would be this one.
October
Light is still beautiful, days are shorter, the sea is warm enough for swimming until mid-month. Excellent month for autumnal-feeling sessions with warmer colours in the gallery. Some restaurants close towards the end of the month.
November–February
Off-season. Many restaurants and some hotels close. Days are short (sunset around 5 PM). The light, when there is light, is stunning — low, warm, almost horizontal. The villages are nearly empty, which means total freedom in shooting.
Risk: weather. Rain and storms can disrupt schedules. I always offer a free reschedule for weather-cancelled sessions in winter.
March
Days lengthen, weather begins to recover, occasional spectacular sunny days mixed with rain. Bougainvillea hasn’t bloomed yet but everything else is starting to come back. Quiet, photographable, and cheap to travel.
How to choose your slot
A simple flowchart:
- High season (June–August), can wake up early? → 7:00 AM.
- High season, prefer evenings? → Golden hour, 6:00–7:30 PM.
- High season, want to skip crowds entirely? → Atrani or Ravello at any time.
- Shoulder season (April–May, September–October), any time? → Golden hour, hands down.
- Off-season, weather permitting? → Late afternoon, then push into blue hour.
A note on weather
The coast has its own microclimate. Forecasts up to 48 hours out are reliable; beyond that, less so. I monitor weather for every booked session and reach out 24 hours ahead if there’s risk. We can:
- Reschedule (free, my preference if forecast is bad)
- Move locations to a more sheltered spot
- Push earlier or later in the day to dodge a band of rain
In five years of shooting I’ve had to fully cancel only a handful of sessions — most weather concerns are workable.
