Proposal Photographer on the Amalfi Coast — Discreet Coverage of the Moment
I shoot maybe 15–20 proposals a year on the Amalfi Coast. The format is always the same: I'm in position before you arrive, photographing from a distance you've forgotten about, and as soon as the answer is yes (or right after) we transition into a short celebratory portrait session. You leave with the moment captured and a proper set of just-engaged portraits.

How a proposal session works on the day
The week before, we exchange messages: location, exact spot, time of day, weather backup. The day before, I confirm the meeting point and walk through the signal you’ll use to tell me you’re about to do it (a small gesture I’ve already noted — a hand on her back, lifting your sunglasses, anything natural).
On the day, I arrive 15 minutes early, scout the angle, and find a spot where I’m out of your line of sight. You arrive on time, walk to the spot we discussed, and proceed as planned. I’m shooting from the moment you reach the location.
After the proposal — 30 to 60 seconds of hugging, crying, looking at the ring — I make myself visible, you realise it was all planned, and we transition into the celebration session. This is when I get most of the images: the just-engaged glow, ring details, walking together with the new weight in your hand, the natural smiles you can’t fake.
Choosing a location
Each spot has a different feel:
- Ravello, Terrace of Infinity — high drama, the most “movie” of the locations. Sunset over the gulf. Best when not packed (early or late).
- Positano, harbour wall or upper terraces — postcard backdrop, the village rising behind you. Works well at golden hour.
- Atrani, Piazza Umberto — intimate and private. The smallest crowd risk. Best for a quieter, more personal moment.
- Amalfi cathedral steps — ceremonial, classic, the staircase as natural backdrop. Popular for evening proposals when the cathedral is lit.
- Capri, Gardens of Augustus — if you’re already day-tripping. Iconic Faraglioni view.
Things that almost always come up
- The ring. I’ll take detailed shots of it during the celebration walk — bring a clean cloth in your pocket.
- The witnesses. Some people propose with family hidden nearby; others prefer it just the two of them. I work with both. Tell me in advance.
- Weather. I have a backup plan for every booking. Indoor and covered locations on the coast: the cathedral interior in Amalfi (the cloister), Hotel le Sirenuse’s bar in Positano, Villa Cimbrone’s covered loggia in Ravello.
- Translations. If your partner speaks English/Italian/Russian, I can briefly explain the celebration walk in their language right after the moment so it doesn’t feel rushed.
When you’re ready, message me with your date and rough location idea — even a sentence is enough to start. I’ll come back with options the same day.

Frequently asked questions
How discreet can you actually be?
Very. I shoot with a long lens from 30–60 metres away, dressed neutrally. The Amalfi Coast is full of people with cameras, so a single photographer in a piazza is invisible. We agree the meeting spot, the angle, the signal (you might tilt your head, switch hands, etc.), and I'm in position 15 minutes before you arrive.
Where do most people propose?
The most popular spots are the Terrace of Infinity in Ravello (sunset, dramatic, elevated), the harbour wall in Positano at golden hour, and the small piazza in Atrani for something more intimate and private. I help pick based on your trip and what you want the photos to feel like.
What if she/he says no?
It happens almost never on a proposal trip — but if it did, you'd have a few honest photos of a difficult moment. Most clients in that case ask me not to deliver them, which is fine. Worst-case professional handling is part of the job.
Should we book Express or Signature?
For proposals I always recommend the Signature package. The proposal moment itself takes 2–3 minutes, but you'll want the celebration walk afterwards — the just-engaged photos are some of the best portraits couples ever get because everyone's emotional state is so unguarded.
How far in advance to book?
For proposals: as early as possible. I block dates by the date, not by the time slot. A month ahead is comfortable; two months is ideal for peak weekends. Last-minute (less than 7 days) is sometimes possible — message me and I'll tell you honestly.
Can you film as well as photograph?
I'm a stills photographer, but I can capture short video clips on the same camera (10–20 seconds at a time). For full proposal video coverage I work with a videographer partner — happy to introduce.
