Capri

Photographer in Capri Photo Sessions on the Island Across from the Amalfi Coast

Capri sits 30 minutes by ferry off the western tip of the Amalfi Coast. It's a different island than the coast — whitewashed instead of pastel, more sky and sea than cliff and stone — but it photographs beautifully, especially in the gardens and at the Faraglioni viewpoint. Day-trip sessions from Positano or Amalfi are easy to arrange.

Why a photo session on Capri

Capri is the answer when someone asks for “white and blue, not pastel”. Where Positano cascades in apricot and terracotta, Capri is whitewashed walls, lemon trees, and that famous view of the Faraglioni rocks rising straight out of the sea.

The island is small enough to cover the highlights in a half-day, and different enough from the Amalfi Coast that doing both during a trip gives you two completely separate galleries — one cliffside-Mediterranean, one almost-Greek in feel.

A typical Capri session

If you’re staying on the Amalfi Coast, plan a day trip. Take the morning ferry (Positano around 9–10 AM, Amalfi around 9 AM), and we meet at the top of the funicular in Capri town around 10:30. From there:

  • The Piazzetta — the famous tiny square with café tables and the clock tower. Twenty minutes here covers the village-life shots.
  • Via Camerelle and Via Tragara — boutique-lined streets walking towards the Gardens of Augustus.
  • Gardens of Augustus — the iconic Faraglioni viewpoint. This is the photo people associate with Capri.
  • Optional: Anacapri — a short bus or taxi ride. Smaller, whiter, more village in feel, and the Punta Carena lighthouse at the western tip is one of the most beautiful sunset locations in southern Italy.

Lunch break in between, then we either head down to Marina Grande for the afternoon ferry or continue shooting if you’ve planned to stay over.

Things to plan for

  • Ferry schedules. Check the day before — weather can cancel routes, especially in shoulder season. I always have a backup plan if the ferry is pulled.
  • Crowds in the Gardens. July and August midday they’re shoulder-to-shoulder. Early morning and late afternoon are dramatically calmer.
  • Closed shoes for the Krupp path. Switchback gravel — sandals slip.
  • Sunset shots require an overnight. The last fast ferry to the coast usually leaves Capri before 5 PM in summer (sunset is around 8 PM).

If you’d like, I can help you sketch the day plan — ferry, transfers, lunch booking — when you make the request, so the logistics don’t eat into shooting time.

Best photo spots — Capri

The Gardens of Augustus — the classic Faraglioni viewpoint, blue-and-white panorama.
The Piazzetta in Capri town — small square, café tables, white facades.
Via Krupp viewpoint — the famous switchback path zigzagging down the cliff.
Anacapri's whitewashed alleys — quieter than Capri town, more village in feel.
Punta Carena lighthouse at sunset (Anacapri side) — the western tip, golden hour into blue hour.
Best light: 9:00–11:00 AM (the day-trippers are still arriving) or after 5:30 PM (the cruise crowd leaves on the late ferries). Midday between noon and 4 PM the Piazzetta and Gardens of Augustus are very busy in season.

Frequently asked questions

How do we get to Capri from the Amalfi Coast?

Fast ferries run from Positano (about 35–45 minutes) and Amalfi (about 1 hour) several times a day in season. Schedules change between summer and winter — I'll send you the current ferry options when we book.

Should we do Capri as a day trip or stay overnight?

For a session, day-trip works fine if we time it well. Arrive on a 10 AM ferry, shoot from 11 to 1 with a break, lunch, return on a late afternoon ferry. If you want to shoot at sunset, you'll need to stay overnight (last ferry to the coast leaves around 5–6 PM in summer).

How do we get around the island?

From Marina Grande (the port) the funicular goes up to Capri town. To reach Anacapri there are buses, taxis (the open-top ones with white roofs are iconic) or a small bus through hairpin bends. I plan the routing so we minimise transfers.

Is Capri very expensive?

The session price is the same as on the mainland (€120 / €200). Ferries, the funicular, lunch and any taxis are extra. Budget €60–€100 per person on top of the session for a comfortable day trip.

Can we shoot inside the Blue Grotto?

No — boats inside the grotto are rowed by licensed operators on a strict schedule, with no time for portraits. We can shoot the entrance from outside, on the water, but it's not a primary location.
