Solo travel photoshoot

Solo Travel Photoshoot on the Amalfi Coast — Portraits That Aren't Selfies

Solo travel sessions are the simplest part of my work and often the most satisfying. You came on a beautiful trip alone — by choice, by chance, by circumstance — and you'd like a few real portraits, not phone selfies, to remember it. We meet for 45 to 90 minutes, walk a stretch of the village together, and come away with images you'll actually use.

How a solo session usually goes

Most solo sessions I shoot are 45 to 60 minutes. We meet at a meeting point we agreed by message — usually somewhere obvious near the centre of the village. I greet you, we chat for a couple of minutes about what kind of photos you’d like (formal portrait? travel-blog mood? a mix?), and we start walking.

The first frames I shoot are while you’re not posing — you’re walking towards me, looking around, finding your footing. Almost everyone relaxes faster this way than if I started with “stand here and smile.” Once you’ve stopped feeling self-conscious about the camera, we move into the deliberate frames: leaning on a railing with the village behind, sitting on a step, looking out over the gulf.

A typical Express session covers one location intimately — say, the cathedral square in Amalfi, or the upper streets and the dome viewpoint in Positano. A typical Signature solo session covers two to three: maybe Positano harbour, then the staircase up to the church, then a quieter alley.

What I notice from solo travellers

  • Most people are nervous for the first 5 minutes. That’s fine. The first 5 minutes are also the easiest to throw away — those frames are warm-ups, and the gallery hides them.
  • Many are surprised by how well it goes. The most common feedback is “I didn’t expect to enjoy it.” Walking through a beautiful village with someone telling you you look good is, structurally, a nice afternoon.
  • The shots people use most are the candid ones. The portraits are for printing and framing. The walking, looking-out-at-the-view shots are for social and for sending to friends.

Before the session

  • Pick a slot. Sunrise is empty and magical. Sunset is golden and emotional. Both work; mornings are slightly more practical for solo travellers.
  • Write down two or three frames you specifically want. A specific viewpoint? A specific kind of photo? Tell me upfront — easy to plan around.
  • Bring water and comfortable shoes. Same as any session on the coast.
  • Don’t over-prepare. The best solo portraits aren’t the most made-up ones; they’re the ones where you look like yourself on the best version of your trip.

When you’re ready, send a message with your dates and which village you’re staying near. I’ll come back with a slot suggestion the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Is it weird to do a photoshoot alone?

Not at all — about a third of my bookings are solo travellers. Some are on long-anticipated trips they're taking by themselves. Some are professionals who need new portraits in a beautiful setting. Some are travel content creators. Some just always wanted real photos of themselves on a great trip. The session itself feels relaxed and conversational, not staged.

I have no idea how to pose. What do I do?

Nothing, to start with. We walk and talk for the first 5–10 minutes; I shoot the natural moments and you don't need to do anything. After that I give simple direction — turn your shoulders this way, look down the street, lean against this wall. It's incremental, you'll feel comfortable by minute fifteen.

Express or Signature?

For a single location and a focused gallery (say, just Positano harbour at sunset), Express €120 is plenty. For more variety — cathedral, alleys, harbour, beach — Signature €200 covers two to three spots in 90 minutes, which gives you a much more storytelling gallery.

What should I wear?

What you'd actually wear on the trip. The Amalfi Coast has a soft pastel palette so cream, sand, dusty rose, soft blue and white photograph beautifully. Avoid loud branded clothing. A flowing dress or skirt photographs especially well in motion — but jeans and a linen shirt work too if that's more you.

Can I include some shots that look like I'm on a candid trip — looking out at the view, walking away — instead of facing the camera?

Yes — these are usually the most-shared shots from a solo session. We deliberately mix "facing camera" portraits with "in the moment" frames. Tell me beforehand if you have a clear preference and I'll bias the gallery that way.
